Happy Halloween!

It's that time of year again, grab your buckets and get ready for some treats!

Throughout FSMR's long span of progress, Samus's sprite has gone through many iterations. The current version will be the final design, taking a lot of influences from Samus Returns.

The gravity suit was shown in the last update, but that design may not be accurate to how she will look, as her suit design blends other designs throughout the series.

Some new changes are coming to the overall gameplay as well. Beam combos are still a thing but no longer work quite the same way they did before; in a good way. You will be able to activate them the same way with power bombs, however you will no longer need to go to the menu and turn off everything except the beam you want to use. You can now select a "primary beam", which will automatically select the most recent beam Samus aquires but you can change any time on the menu or through the hot keys/ R2 and L2 on controllers.Your primary beam will be featured as the color of the lights on Samus's arm cannon, this does not affect how the beams stack however.

Reworking Samus's animation has been fun so far. Unlike games like Other M or Fusion, I hope to portray Samus's personality through her body language and the way she interacts with the environment. You can expect to see some idle animations as seen in the Prime series or AM2R.

The environments in this remake are also getting a facelift. The overall style is a somewhat enhanced version of Metroid: Zero Mission, many assets from Zero Mission will be returning in fact while some that could have been used will be replaced entirely with custom assets. Not too long ago, a personal friend who would have been creating all new backgrounds became more invested in other parts of his personal life and his own art projects and cannot do any work for FSMR anymore, so any new backgrounds coming to FSMR will have to wait.

Samus's new facing the player idle can be seen occasionally, especially after exiting her gunship.

A whole lot of temporary background. There is a room next to this that will not be featured in the remake whilst being in the original. The missile tank that was once there is somewhere else now!

The temporary background does not do this room justice, this is the first fungus cave Samus enters after retrieving morphball bombs.

Norfair is also recieveing a bit of a facelift. Power grip will be returning and be a part of Samus's arsenal right from the start. As you may have noticed as well Samus's back is to the player when she faces left, another piece of inspiration from Samus Returns.

I think this room might be important for some reason...

Whilst these are all mockups, they are also built in the current engine and are playable rooms. Samus's sprites still have a long way to go, you could say these are mockups utilizing Samus's new design, which has not been implimented yet.

The screen resolution for these images follow the same as the GBA, 240x160. The room designs are based on this resolution size, however this is temporary and will be increasing for those wondering if the resolution will stay as-is.

Happy Halloween everyone, stay safe today and I hope to bring more FSMR content soon! Until next time!

    1. Thank you, I will post an update if a demo becomes available ^^

It is better however if the full game is released so it is out there before the big N can shut it down.

  3. Wait... The gun is on the currect side when she's turned to the left? Aw man. I'm gonna miss that. I know it makes sence to do that, and it is such small change. But i got so used to it by now. Oh well. Sacrifices must be made to progress. Still hyped though.

    1. It has always been on the correct side since Metroid II Return of Samus... Did you really think they would just flip the sprites in all of the previous games? They even had facing left sprites in Metroid NES, they were scrapped and still in the games gfx files...

  4. I'd like to know how should I contact you to help you with some sprites... I shouldn't be of greater help, but I believe I can somehow help you.

  5. To be honest I really don't see why change to the new one, it have some wonky posing and proportions. Besides it seems to be a waste to not use the previous version that even have a Gravity suit variantion, I think a pool would be good to such a extreme change.

    1. Her sprites are still a work in progress and are being tweaked daily. The previous version right before this one is less finished as well at this point. There is technically a Varia and Gravity suit which have been redone since the last previews, but all focus is being put on the Power Suit first before doing anymore work on them (which will come easier once the Power Suit is completely finished).

I figured instead of reusing Metroid Zero Mission's Samus and slightly modifying it, something new and completely custom would be like a breath of fresh air. The images posted above have a blur filter on and there was some weird glitch on a couple of the images, so what you see in the images above may not reflect what they looked like at the time either keep in mind.

If more people find they do not like the new design and liked one of the previous designs better, I will put up a poll. Thank you for the feedback ^^

  6. hey heres an idea: if you get more people working on it you might be able to add some more details to this remake such as where the space pirate mothership was destroyed in zero mission etc. i obviously cant help but i think it would be cool. also good luck hiding from nintendo's eye of saron

  7. Always great to see an update on this project! The sprites and environments are looking fantastic! My only issue with Samus's sprite in these images is that she looks weirdly thin, and her back is a bit weirdly bent. I know it's the she pose she has in Samus Returns, but I'm not sure it's translating quite perfectly here.

But that aside, everything looks awesome! That turnaround animation is especially solid, and the idea you present on implementing Beam Combos is super cool! Great work, and I hope you're able to get more help in making this happen!

    1. Thank you for the feedback ^^ I am aware some parts of her still need work (especailly on parts like her toothpick legs in a few frames). Some of these have already been updated and changed, in the update coming this December the changes will be shown and should be better. If you or anyone else feel there is something off or that needs work with the pixel art please post about it, feedback is much appreciated in making this game as close to perfect as possible :D

  10. Really nice update
I visited the website a while ago, when AM2R wasn't even released, and recently I saw you were working on the project again !
I hope that one day we will see all your work ! Good luck ! I'll do the same thing I did with AM2R, I will visit every month until you release, I don't want this project to loose any popularity, I want it to release !!

  13. Hey, if you need anybody to make some new updated maps, I could do some. I cant animate them, but I could make some photoshop map layouts. I've been playing super Metroid lately, and wanted to see some fusion/zero mission remake, I saw this and its been going on for 8 years. I have nothing better to do, so contact me.

    1. After looking at the maps, it might take me a week to do one of the maps, depending on the size.

    2. This would be awesome :D We don't have all the assets ready quite yet however. In fact, there are a lot of changes coming to the map we are still working on. As we get an idea of how changes and new parts of Zebes's map work I will contact you about it ^^

  14. Stop making new Samus sprites, get the engine completely functional and have it have all the items. Get a map engine working then start designing areas. In the end, you can make it pretty looking.

    1. FSMR's team has grown and I am happy to say both of these can be worked on and are in fact being worked on at the same time ^^ A new update has been posted detailing this.

  15. I sure hope that this isn't cancelled and that this is still a work in progress, because this is looking very promising. I'm just curious as to how close it is to completion.
